The first all-private mission launches to the International Space Station

Axiom-1 makes history

Axiom-1 is making history as the first all-private mission to the International Space Station. The four crew members—Michael López-Alegría, Larry Connor, Eytan Stibbe, and Mark Pathy—launched on their historic flight from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center on a SpaceX Falcon 9 and Crew Dragon capsule at 11:17am ET on Friday, April 8.
At 7:45 am ET on Saturday, April 9, the crew will dock to the International Space Station and begin their 8-day journey aboard the Station, conducting more than 25 scientific research and technology demonstrations and doing research to lay the groundwork for Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station. You can follow along with the latest updates on the Axiom-1 mission blog.

It's about the journey

Just prior to liftoff, AX-1 Mission Specialist, Eytan Stibbe shared a piece of a beautiful poem about the journey. Upon researching the full Greek poem, Ithaka, we find what Eytan is trying to communicate for himself and all who listened: That the journey is more important than the destination.

"Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now."
